Non-credit Course Scope
Total IBM Courses: ????
Estimated Yearly IBM registrations: 140 (FY 07)
Total ICCiE Courses: ????
Estimated Yearly ICCIE registrations:
Currently, non-credit registrations are handled by a patchwork of web based forms, processing scripts and individuals. At some point there will need to be a safe, reliable, and efficient way to handle this and similar courses (we've already seen requests from Extension, Athletics Management, etc).
A typical student registration currently looks like this:
1. Student self registers, or is registered, via a web based form. Their data is put into a database and held for processing.
Note to Justin: Can you describe the differences between ICCIE and IBM?
2. An email notification is sent to an administrator at the CTL informing them that there is a registration waiting to be processed.
3. The administrator visits a protected web page sometime in the next 24 hours and downloads a formatted list that includes the student's registration data and account information (passwords and all). This list is generated by a script that queries the database noted in step one.
4. The administrator logs into WebCT admin and uploads the registration list, which is processed by WebCT and thus updates the registration data of all students in the list.
Liabilities Associated with Current System
Student registration form is not secure (IS THIS TRUE?)
Student registration database lives on a server (dln.uvm.edu?) that is not maintained. (TRUE? - not sure how describe this best) Current staff skill set does not include server maintenance. Difficult to move to a university supported server because.......
Noncredit Registration/Delivery Options
1. Maintain ICCIE and IBM courses on WebCT
Install a separate installation of WebCT dedicated to noncredit use. CE would have administrative access to this install and could create course space and have control of account management. This system would not have any other UVM courses on it - it would be restricted to non-credit courses and associated users.
System administration would still be handled by ETS/SAA, but application administration could be handled by CE with support from CTL or others.
Costs Associated with this Option
Continue WebCT license
CE staff time for account management
